Would any plod like to comment on this issue?

Basically where a 4 lane carriageway splits to two different destinations such that L1 and L2 go to one destination and L3 and L4 go to another; is this still a 4 lane carriageway or does it become two 2 lane carriageways for the sake of towing?

IMHO the split will make two two lanes carriageways

I agree. LGVs do it all the time at M1 J19 southbound where the A14 dedicated lane splits off.

As soon as the carriageway markings change, or the over head signs differentiate between lanes.

If the trailer only went into lane 3 or 4 after the carriageway was divided into two then it is legal but if it went over too early (before the 2+2 lane line split) then it is illegal

The right-hand lane of a motorway with three or more lanes MUST NOT be used (except in prescribed circumstances) if you are driving
any vehicle drawing a trailer
Which makes it lane 4 legality we are discussing... lane 3 is irrelevant.
